It is a skin condition that causes one or more areas of skin to darken and thickened .
The affected skin often feels velvety . The skin changes typically occur in people who are obese or have diabetes . Children who develop the condition are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes because it has been associated with insulin resistance .
